Having been brought up in an era when ‘make-do-and-mend‘ had not yet been re-cycled into ‘recycling‘, we are always loathe to throw away things that have apparently outlived their perceived usefulness.

It was a beautiful day on Easter Saturday. The Fund-raising Committee at Llys Nini had organised an Easter Bonnet competition and an Easter Egg Hunt for the local children. There was a small entry fee (it was, after all a fund raising day as well as a ‘fun day’), with concessions for family groups.

In the olden days, the only way of identifying the owner of a dog or cat was to hope that it was wearing a collar with its address on it so it could be safely returned if it happened to get lost.

Although this is not the actual cat… it looks very similar! We had already done a full morning’s voluntary work for the animal centre… a dog, three rabbits and a cat had been transported to the vet’s surgery for treatment.

Years ago, I was a full-time working mother. One afternoon, I finished work early and visited my son’s classroom. All around the walls were pictures of females, drawn by the children, all entitled ‘My Mum’. All were drawn with great care, but I must admit, none was recognisable as anyone that I knew!

We were in our late fifties, but still very active and forward looking. Whilst we were preparing our boat for the retirement trip to the Med., we were in the process of having her dragged out of the water for the annual scrubbing of the bottom and the ritual application of antifouling paint.
